Sync Settings — Direction, Defaults and Data to Sync
Sync Settings is step 1 of the setup under your Xero organisation. It decides the shape of everything that follows.
Sync direction
The choice here applies to the connection as a whole, not to individual objects.
| Option | What happens |
|---|---|
| One Way | The sync pulls from Xero into Salesforce. Changes made in Salesforce aren't pushed back by the sync. |
| Two Way | The sync also pushes Salesforce changes to Xero, for each document type you've enabled below. |
TwoCanConnect ships set to One Way on purpose. While you're still mapping fields and deciding what to sync, one-way means nothing you're experimenting with in Salesforce reaches your Xero accounts. Switch to Two Way when you're ready to go live.
Default Xero sales account
When someone creates a product in Salesforce without specifying a Xero account code, this is the account it lands in. Sales is the usual choice.
Setting it isn't optional in practice: without a default, products created outside your normal process fail to sync rather than landing somewhere sensible.
Default Xero purchase account
The same idea for purchase orders: the Xero account a purchase order line uses when the product has no purchase account of its own. Leave it blank and the line is left empty for the user to choose. A purchase order never falls back to the sales account.
Customer types to sync
Xero distinguishes customers from suppliers. This setting decides which of them become Salesforce Accounts:
- Customers Only — the default, and right for most sales-led teams
- Suppliers Only — for purchase-order-led workflows
- Both — when you raise invoices and purchase orders against the same records
If you're not sure, start with Customers Only. Widening later just syncs more records; narrowing later leaves Accounts in Salesforce that no longer sync, which is more confusing to unpick.
Data to sync
Below the direction settings, Data to Sync is a toggle per document type. Anything switched off is ignored by both the historical and the ongoing sync.
| Toggle | Plan |
|---|---|
| Sync Invoices | All plans |
| Sync Repeating Invoice | All plans |
| Sync Quotes | Professional and Advanced |
| Sync Bills | Advanced |
| Sync Credit Notes | Advanced |
| Sync Purchase Orders | Advanced |
A toggle that's greyed out isn't included in your subscription, or hasn't been provisioned yet. If you've upgraded and it's still disabled, get in touch and we'll switch it on.
Bills and purchase orders belong to suppliers, so turning on Sync Bills or Sync Purchase Orders sets Customer Types to Sync to Both automatically. The screen asks you to confirm before it does.
